What This AI ATS Resume Checker Analyzes

The checker does what an applicant tracking system does — parses your file into structured data — and then does what a good recruiter does: judges whether what came out is complete, searchable, and convincing. Five checks run on every upload.

Parsing & text extraction

Can the text be pulled out completely and in the right order? Scanned pages, outlined fonts, and scrambled column flow are caught here — the failures that make a resume invisible.

Section detection

Whether contact info, work experience, education, and skills are found and labeled the way parsers expect — and whether dates and titles attach to the right jobs.

Formatting hazards

Tables, multi-column layouts, text boxes, graphics carrying information, header/footer contact details — each flagged with the specific reason it trips parsers.

Keyword & skills coverage

Are your hard skills present as searchable text, in standard forms recruiters query? The AI spots skills implied by your bullets but missing from your skills list.

Content strength

Beyond machine-readability: weak openers ("responsible for"), bullets without outcomes, missing metrics, and summary quality — the things that decide the human read after the parse.

All of it in one pass

One upload, a scored report with specific fixes. No account, and your file is deleted after processing.

What Your Score Actually Means

The overall score blends the three categories — Design (machine-readability of the layout), Structure (sections, headers, dates), and Content (keywords, verbs, evidence). It's a readiness measure, not a verdict from any single employer's system. Here's how to read your band:

80+
Strong

Your resume parses cleanly and reads well. Stop polishing the document — your remaining leverage is tailoring keywords to each specific job description before you apply. Don't chase 100; past this band, effort belongs elsewhere.

60–79
Fixable

The bones are good but specific issues are costing you visibility — usually a formatting hazard or thin keyword coverage. The report lists them in priority order; most are 15-minute fixes. Re-run the check after each round.

<60
Rebuild

Patching individual issues won't be efficient — typically the layout itself (columns, tables, or a scanned source) is fighting the parser. Rebuilding on a parse-safe template takes minutes and fixes the whole category at once.

What to Do With Your Results

A score without a next step is trivia. Match your report's biggest flag to the path below.

Flagged: formatting & parsing

Rebuild on a safe template

Columns, tables, or extraction errors mean the layout is the problem. Upload the same file to the resume builder — it keeps your content and regenerates the document on a single-column, parse-clean template. Got a very old file? The resume converter handles 2010-era Word docs and even scans.

Typical time: ~5 minutes

Flagged: keywords & skills

Mirror the job description

Add the missing skills the report identified — in the exact wording target job posts use, once in your skills list and once in a bullet. The keyword method, with worked examples, is in our ATS resume guide; the AI builder can apply it per job description automatically.

Typical time: ~15 minutes per application

Flagged: content strength

Sharpen the bullets

Weak verbs and missing metrics survive any template. Rework flagged bullets to verb–scope–result form ("Cut onboarding time 40% by…"), then finish the application with a matching letter from the AI cover letter generator.

Then: re-run the check to confirm

Why Check Before You Apply

Nearly every mid-size and large employer routes applications through an ATS, and recruiters work from the parsed record — not your carefully designed PDF. A resume that parses badly doesn't get rejected; it just never shows up in their searches. You'd never know which applications vanished.

Tables and multi-column layouts scramble the parse order
Skills inside graphics carry no searchable text
Contact details in headers get skipped by some systems
Missing job-post keywords keep you out of recruiter searches
ATS Scanner Simulation
Contact Info Partially Found
Experience Parse Error
Education Missing Dates
Skills Not Detected
Keywords Low Match
Compatibility Score 29% Rejected

ATS Checker — Frequently Asked Questions

Is the resume checker really free?+

Yes — the check, the score, and the improvement suggestions are free, with no account or credit card. We make money when people choose to rebuild their resume with our paid builder; the checker itself has no paywall.

What happens to my resume after the check?+

The uploaded file is analyzed and then deleted immediately after processing. It isn't added to any database, shared, or used for anything beyond generating your report.

How accurate is the score compared to a real ATS?+

Honest answer: there is no single "real ATS" — Workday, Greenhouse, Taleo, and iCIMS each parse a little differently, and no third-party checker sees their internals. What our checker measures are the failure modes those systems share: extraction quality, section detection, formatting hazards, and keyword searchability. A resume that scores well here parses well broadly; a specific employer's ranking still depends on that job's requirements.

What is a good ATS score?+

80 or above means the document is ready and your effort should move to per-job keyword tailoring. 60–79 means specific, listed fixes. Below 60 usually means the layout itself needs replacing rather than patching. Chasing a perfect 100 has diminishing returns — past 80, tailoring beats polishing.

What file formats can I upload?+

PDF, DOCX, DOC, TXT, and images (JPG, PNG, WEBP, HEIC, and more) — including a photo of a printed resume. If you upload an image or scan, note that the check will tell you what a text-capable ATS would see, which for scans is often the core problem itself.

Can I check multiple versions of my resume?+

Yes, and you should — run the check after each round of fixes, and compare tailored variants before sending them. The score is most useful as a before/after measure of your own edits.
