How It Works: Job Description In, Tailored Letter Out

The generator has two inputs, and both matter. The job description tells it what the employer is screening for; your CV supplies the evidence. The letter is where they intersect.

1

Pick your CV

Choose any CV in your MobileCV library — or build one from an upload first. The AI works from your actual experience, so it never invents jobs, dates, or metrics you didn't give it.

2

Paste the job description

The full posting, straight from the job board. The AI extracts the company name, the role's must-have requirements, and the tone of the ad — a startup's posting and a hospital's posting get very different letters.

3

Review, refine, download

Read the draft, then adjust it in plain language — "more formal," "lead with the leadership experience," "shorter." Download the finished letter as a cleanly formatted PDF ready to attach or upload.

What you paste

Senior Software Engineer — TechCorp. 5+ years Python and cloud infrastructure. Must have AWS, Docker, CI/CD experience. Leadership experience preferred.

What comes back

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am excited to apply for the Senior Software Engineer position at TechCorp. With seven years of Python development and extensive AWS infrastructure work, I can contribute from week one.

In my current role, I architected a containerized microservices platform with Docker and Kubernetes that cut deployment time by 73%, and built the CI/CD pipelines that now handle 200+ daily deployments across a team I mentor…

Every claim in the output traces back to the CV you selected — nothing is fabricated.

Why a Tailored Letter Beats a Template

Recruiters read hundreds of letters built from the same handful of downloadable templates. The tell is always the same: sentences that could be sent to any company, for any job, by any candidate.

A template letter says

  • "I am a hardworking team player with excellent communication skills."
  • "I believe I would be a valuable asset to your organization."
  • The same paragraph order and the same adjectives as the other 40 applicants who downloaded it.
  • Nothing about this company — because the writer didn't know where it would be sent.

A tailored letter says

  • The employer's name, the exact role title, and a requirement quoted from their own posting.
  • One or two achievements from your CV, chosen because they answer that requirement — with numbers.
  • The vocabulary the employer screens for, which also helps when recruiters keyword-search applications.
  • A close that asks for the interview and names why this company specifically.

Doing this manually takes 30–45 minutes per application, which is why most people stop tailoring after the third job. The generator does the cross-referencing in seconds, so application #14 gets the same quality of letter as application #1. Want to see what strong tailoring reads like? What Sets This Generator Apart

Plenty of tools will produce a plausible-sounding letter from a prompt. The differences that matter show up in the details.

Grounded in your CV

Chat-style generators hallucinate experience if your prompt is thin. This one only draws on the CV you selected — if a metric isn't in your document, it won't appear in your letter.

Conversational revisions

"More formal." "Cut the second paragraph." "Lead with the certification." Plain-language edit requests regenerate the letter with your direction applied — no re-prompting from scratch.

Tone matched to the employer

The AI reads the posting's register — a law firm and a seed-stage startup get letters with different formality, sentence rhythm, and sign-offs, automatically.

15+ languages

Generate the letter in the language of the posting — English, Spanish, German, French, Arabic, Chinese, and more — with business conventions appropriate to each.

Submission-ready PDF

Output is a cleanly typeset one-page PDF with your header block — not a wall of text to copy into Word and re-format. Attach it or upload it as-is.

One system with your resume

Letters generate from the same CV your resume renders from, so titles, dates, and numbers always agree between the two documents — a consistency recruiters do check.

Cover Letter vs Resume: What's the Difference?

They answer two different questions. Your resume answers "what have you done?" — a structured, scannable record of roles, dates, skills, and quantified results, written in fragments, designed to survive both a recruiter's six-second skim and automated screening. Your cover letter answers "why you, why us, why now?" — a one-page argument in full prose that connects two or three items from that record to this specific opening.

They're complements, not substitutes. A resume without a letter is a spec sheet with no salesperson; a letter without a strong resume is a claim with no evidence. Build the resume first (our resume builder or AI CV builder handles that), then generate letters from it — which is exactly how this tool is wired.

Cover Letter Resume
Job it does Argues fit for one specific role Documents your full qualifications
Form Prose paragraphs, addressed to a person Bulleted sections, no salutation
Length 250–400 words, always one page 1–2 pages depending on experience
Voice First person, complete sentences Fragment style, no "I"
Reuse between jobs Rewritten (or regenerated) per application Lightly adjusted per application
When it's required Often optional — but read as a work sample when submitted Always

AI Cover Letter Generator FAQ

Is the cover letter generator free?+

You get 3 free credits at sign-up and each generated letter costs one credit — no credit card required to start. If you need more: 100 credits for $14.99, or a one-time $119 lifetime membership with effectively unlimited use.

Do I need a CV before I can generate a letter?+

Yes — by design. The letter is generated from your CV so every claim in it is real and defensible in an interview. If you don't have one in MobileCV yet, upload any existing resume (PDF, Word, even a photo) to the AI CV builder and it becomes your source document in about a minute.

Will recruiters know it was written with AI?+

What recruiters actually detect is genericness — letters that could have been sent anywhere. Because these letters are built from your specific CV and the specific posting, they contain details no generic letter has: your metrics, their requirements, their company name in context. Read the draft, adjust anything that doesn't sound like you, and send it as your own — it is.

Can I edit the letter after it's generated?+

Yes, and the fastest way is conversational: tell the AI "make it more formal," "cut it to three paragraphs," or "emphasize the budget-management experience" and it regenerates with your direction applied. You keep full control over the final text before downloading the PDF.

What languages does it support?+

15+ languages, including English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, and Japanese. Applying across Europe? Pair a localized letter with an official-format CV from our Europass builder.

How long should a cover letter be?+

Half a page: 250–400 words in 3–4 paragraphs, never more than one page. Hiring managers skim letters in under a minute, so the ideal cover letter length is the shortest version that names the role, proves one or two relevant results with numbers, and says why this company. The generator produces letters in this range by default — if a draft runs long, tell it "cut to three paragraphs."

Should I send a cover letter if it's marked optional?+

When it costs 60 seconds, yes. "Optional" means the employer won't reject you for skipping it — but a sharp, tailored letter is a free tiebreaker against candidates with similar resumes, and in writing-heavy or client-facing roles it doubles as a work sample.
